Where: The Library
When: late October 2021 (fifth year)

It was starting to get harder and harder to find time to himself when it wasn't early in the morning or late at night. These days it seemed like Scorpius and Alby were always together, and even when they weren't studying they were in the company of friends--usually Alex Moran and Joe Wenlock--who also seemed to like to hanging out with Scorpius because he knew so much more than any other Slytherin their year. Even on weekends Scorpius usually woke up and found himself in the library or in the common room by the time afternoon rolled around, a few textbooks in his bag and a sheaf of parchments open in front of him as he scratched down notes.

It was a good thing that Alby had family here at Hogwarts, or he might not have gotten time to himself at all. Alby had said something about hanging out with his brother and sister in the Gryffindor common room, and Scorpius had been more than relieved to see his best friend go off for a bit of the afternoon. What he was about to do was not something he wanted Alby around to witness.

Scorpius wandered about the library, looking for a specific free table to study at. It was clustered with students studying silently, at this time of year they were mostly upper year Ravenclaws studying for their N.E.W.T.s, though there were the occasional younger years from each house in random pockets of twos or threes, talking quietly amongst themselves as they tried to figure out their work. Scorpius spotted the brilliant blue hair of Douglas Hwan, or Hawk, as he was commonly called by the other students, sitting alone in the middle of a table in the back of the room, a wide, empty space surrounding him.

Scorpius knew him from his classes where he had a reputation of being incredibly smart, despite being one of the most, well, colorful people in his year. It never seemed that Hawk had to study hard to get his good marks, though he could be spotted occasionally in the library when he wasn't dallying in some corner of the castle having a conversation with a group of Ravenclaw girls or just minding his own business. Scorpius had certainly never exchanged words with him, but right now the problems plaguing him seemed more important than maintaining his reputation of being cold and aloof with the other students of the school.

Scorpius sidled over to the seat beside Hawk, trying to look as if he was just taking a chair beside a friend. Hawk looked up from his text, which upon second glance wasn't a textbook at all, but something that had a rather raunchy title that made Scorpius's cheeks color a bit. That probably explained why there was no one else sitting at the table. Acting as if this was an everyday occurrence, Scorpius pulled out his Transfigurations textbook and began reading it, keenly aware of the fact that Hawk was now staring at him out of the corner of his eye.

Scorpius kept his eye on his book, and clearing his throat he spoke quietly. "I've got a question for you, Hawk."

Hawk raised and eyebrow and went back to his reading, a giant grin on his face. "Yes, I am single and it would be absolutely fabulous to date someone with an ice-cold reputation like Scorpius Malfoy."

Scorpius pursed his lips and almost got up and walked out right on the spot. He pushed his glasses up. "You don't even know if I'm interested in you."

Hawk shrugged. "Well, besides sitting down right next to me, of course I don't. It's a risk you always take when you're asking someone out. And you don't really seem thrilled that I just agreed to go out with you."

"I already have someone in mind," Scorpius replied tersely.

Hawk shook his head, not looking in the least bit disappointed. "Lucky bastard." He flipped a page in his book, keeping up the pretense that they weren't really having a conversation despite the fact they could be heard by anyone walking by. "So what's your question?"

Scorpius coughed a bit, suddenly realizing that how he was going to phrase his question sounded incredibly stupid, but it was too late to back out now. Heaven forbid Hawk get the wrong impression and think he, Scorpius Malfoy, actually liked him. "When you ask someone else out, do you know that they're gay beforehand? Or at least open to dating blokes?"

"Sometimes I can tell," Hawk replied. He put his book down and looked right at Scorpius. "You know, if they're a really flamboyant fag like me. People like you though, harder to tell if you don't know what to look for."

Scorpius blinked. "And what about me would tip someone like you off?"

Hawk grinned. "You're repressed as all fucking hell."

"I am not!"

"Of course you are," Hawk snorted. "I've never met someone so repressed in his life. Well, okay, maybe you're actually second or third."

"Thanks," said Scorpius acidly, putting down his book to glare at Hawk, who seemed rather unaffected by the mood of his conversation partner. Scorpius wanted to say that thank you very much, he was not repressed because his mother was completely open to the idea of him dating other men, but in all honesty, it was the truth. He was repressed, because he was damn coward for harboring a crush on Albus all year and not telling him.

"That all you wanted to talk about?"

"One more thing," Scorpius said grudgingly.

"Shoot."

"What do you do when you ask a guy out and he's not interested in dating another bloke?"

Hawk looked at him. "What is there to do?"

Scorpius just sat there in stunned silence, not exactly sure what the answer was supposed to be. "I-I don't know," he finally said.

"Move on, man," Hawk replied simply. He picked up his book again, shaking his head. "The only thing you can do is move on."

"Great."

Hawk shrugged. "It's the same as if someone asked you out and you didn't like him or her at all. What're you gonna do? Pine forever? Just keep goin'. That's life."

Scorpius sighed and picked up his textbook, stuffing it back into his bag. "Thanks," he said simply as he stood up and moved away to study elsewhere.

"No problem, man," Hawk said simply. He winked at Scorpius. "Good luck. I hope he likes you too, we need more people playing for our team."

"I am not on anyone's team," Scorpius said stiffly and departed, leaving the library before anybody could start whispering that he'd been seen sitting next to Hawk alone. The last thing he needed was rumors of his possible homosexuality getting out to Alby.

I toooootally thought I replied to this. D: But apparently not. XD; So~ I really liked it, Hawk was so much how I envision him being. (Actually, I sent it along to Valerie, and she was duly impressed too. XD) And at least Scorp kind of got a bit of support~ <3

XD No, no smiting. She very much approves~

Heh, it doesn't do much to advance anything, but at least it gets Alby thinking that other people are starting to notice. XD; And it should go up tonight, when I have time to finish it up, so yay~

(Hee, awesome. :D)
