[LOG] New Year's Eve
Jan. 14th, 2008 07:36 pmWhere: Malfoy Manor, Wiltshire
When: December 31, 2021 (Fifth Year)
Scorpius was practically bouncing on the balls of his feet. He'd been rather distracted all day and for possibly the first time in his life, was having a difficult time sitting still. It had been a little over a week since the last time he'd seen Alby, and he simply couldn't wait any longer. The Manor had been bustling all day, hired house elves running about the entire house and the grounds, cleaning and putting up decorations. The kitchen had smelled wonderful since breakfast, and Scorpius had even snuck down to steal some food early in the afternoon, because he needed to get up out of his armchair in the parlor and move around. His mother and his father were nowhere to be seen--probably helping with the preparations, and for most of the afternoon his only company was Delphina, who liked to try to surprise attack him a few times an hour. It was a good thing for Scorpius that he was already anxious and excited or Delphina would've probably trampled him into the floor before lunch.
As the time wore on into the evening, Delphina got bored with trying test her little brother once every so often and decided to drag him off to his room and play dress-up. Scorpius didn't understand why it mattered whether his jumper was blue, black, or red--it was all the same to him--but Delphina insisted that he had to match, or else bring shame upon the Malfoy for name for years to come. Knowing better than to argue, he let Delphina pick out various outfits for him until she decided that she'd better worry about herself instead, and left him with the choice between a dark green jumper with grey trousers or a dark blue jumper with black trousers. Scorpius closed his eyes and just picked one. Blue and black it was.
Scorpius made one last round in his room to make sure that everything was prepared for Alby's stay. There was an extra set of blankets, an extra pillow, and his room was clean and spotless. It was fifteen minutes before all the guests were due to arrive by Portkey that his father knocked on the door and poked his head inside his son's room.
"Scorpius, the party's almost starting," Draco said, his gaze settling on Scorpius's bed, which had two pillows laying side by side on it.
Scorpius hadn't exactly been a fan of his father's stern Christmas Eve lecture about not doing things he'd regret later. It had been difficult for him not to roll his eyes at his father and assure him that he was never, in his life, going to regret sleeping with his best friend, but for his father's sake he'd refrained.
"Are you sure you don't want to put Alby in one of the guest rooms?" Draco asked, turning to his son, a look of well-intentioned concern on his face.
"Yes, Dad, I'm sure," Scorpius replied firmly. He was not going to budge on this issue. If his father wanted to, he could probably force Alby to take the guest room, but short of casting some serious spells probably had no way to enforce the rule.
Draco paused for a moment, wondering whether or not to press the issue with his son, but apparently thought better of it. "Just make sure nobody hears you," he muttered so quietly that Scorpius wasn't exactly sure his father had said it in the first place.
Scorpius followed his dad downstairs where his family was already gathered, waiting for the guests to arrive in the large foyer of Malfoy Manor. Like he'd been doing almost all holiday, Grandpa Lucius acknowledged his presence but said little to him, but Grandma Cissy fussed all over him, adjusting his tie and picking a few stray pieces of lint off his jumper.
"Don't you look darling?" she said, patting his cheek and pressing a kiss to his forehead. "I don't think I've seen you this excited in years, Scorpius."
"Uh...I guess," Scorpius replied, his cheeks coloring a little pink. There was no way he was going to tell his grandmother that he was just excited his boyfriend was coming, because he didn't actually give a damn about the party itself.
His mother combed her fingers through his hair, and Delphina, in a new, dark purple dress she'd gotten for Christmas, shot him a look.
"You were supposed to wear the striped shirt with that jumper!" she said, a look of disapproval on her face.
Scorpius just shrugged. He thought he looked fine.
Shaking her head, Delphina turned to the guests that had just started arriving.
The Greengrasses arrived first, old friends of the Malfoy family. Scorpius smiled tightly and shook hands with the entire family, wishing each and every one of them a "Happy New Year" despite not knowing a single one of them. Next came the Mann family, the Zabinis, and a few names Scorpius didn't recognize but seemed to be prominent, high-ranking members of the Ministry of Magic. Where was Alby? Scorpius showed the guests the way to the tents in the Manor's back garden, music already playing, hors d'oeuvres and wine floating about on invisible trays.
Scorpius returned for the foyer, looking through the crowd of heads popping in to see if he could see Alby.
